しんたい【進退】

1 〔進むことと退くこと〕 advance or retreat; movement.

●進退きわまる be driven to the wall [corner]; be in the direst straits; be in a dilemma [fix]; be on the horns of a dilemma; find oneself between two fires [the devil and the deep blue sea, a rock and a hard place, Scylla and Charybdis]; 《口》 be up a (gum) tree; 〔立ち往生する〕 be unable to move; get stuck 《in the mud》; be stranded.

●岩登りの途中で進退きわまってしまった. I got completely stuck [《文》 immobilized] halfway up the rock [cliff].

2 〔行動〕 a [one's] course of action.

●進退を誤る take the wrong course (of action); act wrongly [inappropriately, unwisely].

3 〔辞任か留任か〕

●それは監督の進退にかかわる重大な発言であった The statement had a great effect on whether or not the coach would retire.

●進退を決する decide whether to resign

・私は会長と進退を共にするつもりだ. If the chairman resigns, I will, too.

●私の進退はこの企画の結果次第だ. Whether I stay or go will depend (entirely) on the outcome of this attempt.

進退問題 a question of whether or not sb should resign.
